Dangers of a Selection Box

Many companies are now planning a Santa event for their employees and families this Christmas. These are important events for companies, yet the person organising it usually has this task on top of their normal job. In these cases, it makes sense for the organiser to make things as easy as possible.

So, when it comes to a gift for the kids? A selection box! They are relatively cheap and kids love them. Surely a no brainer?

Yet, in an era of corporate responsibility, maybe not. According to Safefood, 1 in 4 kids are overweight or obese; obese children are likely to become obese adults and parents find it difficult to recognise that their child’s weight is not healthy.

A medium-sized M&M Selection Box, contains 108 grammes of sugar. This translates to 27 teaspoons of sugar. According to the American Heart Association, children aged 4-8 with a daily caloric intake of 1,600 calories should consume no more than 130 calories, or about 3 teaspoons a day.

So, a medium-sized selection box contains 9 times the recommended daily intake of sugar for a young child! Time to rethink Santa’s sack.
